A news agency, also called a wire service. It gathers reporting and sells it to newspapers, websites and TV stations, which publish it under their own name. Because its customers sit on every side of the spectrum, left or right is the wrong question to ask about it.

What to know about it

Founded in 1907 as United Press and renamed after absorbing a rival in 1958. For much of the twentieth century it was the Associated Press's only serious competitor, and its reporters were first with some of the century's biggest stories.

What remains is a much smaller operation after decades of decline and repeated changes of ownership. Its history is genuinely distinguished; its present scale is a fraction of what the name suggests, and readers who recognize the initials from mid-century journalism are recognizing a different organization.
