What to know about it

Founded in 2002 by writers opposed to the Iraq war from the right, and published by the non-profit American Ideas Institute. It argues for restraint abroad and skepticism of corporate power, a combination that predates the movement's recent shift and helped shape it.

It gives serious space to a conservative tradition that is neither libertarian nor neoconservative, and its foreign policy writing found allies on the anti-war left. Critics argue its cultural traditionalism is considerably harder-edged than its foreign policy realism, and that the two are not always coherent together.
